Interview with Canadian Rhinoplasty Surgeon Zahi Abou Chacra

Dr. Zahi Abou Chacra is a Canadian surgeon well-versed in rhinoplasty for both functional and aesthetic purposes. He currently works as the Medical Director and Principal Surgeon at Clinique 7 in Montreal, QC. Dr. Chacra discusses the changes that have occurred in rhinoplasty since his career began, the balance between aesthetics and functionality, and what patients should consider before deciding on a procedure.

Q: What inspired you to specialize in rhinoplasty, and how has your philosophy evolved over the years?

  1. ZAHI ABOU CHACRA: I was fascinated by the complexity of the nose’s structure and its importance in the harmony of the human face. Rhinoplasty is among the most complex plastic surgery procedures because it bridges technical skill with artistic vision. My approach to blending those two skills has evolved through the years. I went from being a sort of heavy-handed injector to adopting a more natural and conservative approach, emphasizing natural beauty instead of an unnatural or “perfect” appearance. Today, with all the technical evolution and a more anatomical comprehension of the nose, I can focus on achieving both functional and aesthetic objectives.

Q: What do patients misunderstand most about rhinoplasty?

  1. ZAHI ABOU CHACRA: The common misconception is that rhinoplasty is for cosmetic reasons, where a large percentage of patients want surgery for reasons like improvement of breathing problems caused by structural problems such as the deviated septum. Another myth is that it’s a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Every nose is different, and successful rhinoplasty typically means customizing the process to suit an individual’s features, not to suit any trends. Finally, some patients expect results right away, but rhinoplasty is a game of patience. Final results can sometimes take as long as a year as swelling resolves and tissues adjust.

Q: When pursuing aesthetic goals, how do you balance this with preserving or enhancing nasal function?

  1. ZAHI ABOU CHACRA: This is an important part of what I do. An attractive nose that interferes with breathing isn’t a victory. I closely analyze the nasal anatomy, both internally and externally, to ensure the changes are beneficial for form and function during the consult. I use structural grafting and preservation rhinoplasty to preserve and enhance nasal support. The goal is a natural-appearing nose that blends nicely with the patient’s surrounding facial features and dose nothing to obstruct their breathing.

Q: What would you advise someone who’s thinking about a rhinoplasty procedure?

  1. ZAHI ABOU CHACRA: First, select your surgeon carefully. Look at their portfolio, because the surgeon should have experience in both functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty and specialize in creating elegant, natural-looking results. Second, set reasonable expectations. Focus on improving what you have been naturally given, not striving for perfection. Finally, allow yourself the time to heal. Swelling is to be expected, and final results take time. When planned well, rhinoplasty can be life-changing, but the process is built on trust, preparation, and knowledge.

Q: How do you envision the future of rhinoplasty?

  1. ZAHI ABOU CHACRA: The field is constantly changing. There are new techniques that are geared toward less invasive approaches and shorter recovery times. We’ve started to see a move away from the traditional methods toward preservation rhinoplasty, which preserves more of the patient’s own structures and results in better cosmetic outcomes and fewer complications. Also, digitized imaging and AI simulations are improving consultations, allowing patients to visualize their options with incredible accuracy. I think the future of rhinoplasty will further integrate science, technology, and artistry to provide patients with optimal, tailored outcomes.
